A Program Supporting Nurses to Practice in Aged Care

Altaira Nursing Services, in partnership with Southern Cross Care, is proud to offer graduate nurses and nurses without aged care experience an opportunity for training and internship in residential aged care.

At Altaira Nursing Services we believe that the right balance of practical experience and knowledge is essential. Our Transition to Professional Practice Program has been specially designed to target the practical and theory requirements which are:

• most relevant to the beginning practitioner
• of higher risk to the beginning practitioner and potential employers

The bulk of Altaira’s theory training is performed face to face by aged care professionals with relevant qualifications and sound experience in the area they are teaching.

The theory component is completed prior to practical placement and includes:
• Medication Management
• Falls Management
• ACFI
• Recognition and Management of the Deteriorating Resident
• Palliative Care
• Introduction to electronic care documentation systems

Practical experience is gained through an internship of five days at a Southern Cross Care site and includes:
• Pairing with a staff member experienced in the relevant role
• Achievement of set competencies

This course is appropriate for both graduate Registered and Enrolled nurses as well as nurses experienced in other areas who are wishing to pursue a career in aged care. Successful trainees will gain valuable experience and knowledge as well as being exposed to potential employers and thereby increase their employment opportunities.

Cost of course
Enrolled Nurses $300.00
Registered Nurses $500.00
