Altaira Allied Health and Wellness Centre offers weekly active ageing sessions for older members of the community.
Through these classes, people 65+ are able to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle, while also staying engaged and connected to their community. The classes provide a chance to meet and socialise with others of similar age. No two classes are the same which means that attendees get a variety as they meaningfully improve health outcomes.
As a physio-designed and led program, overseen by Michael Zoumaras, with a focus on strength and balance, the classes offer much more than just an exercise and wellness opportunity.
The program’s benefits resonate deeply with its participants, evident in improved quality of life, enhanced mobility, and reduced reliance on formal support systems. This not only alleviates pressure on public resources but also fosters independence and confidence among older populations, contributing to a healthier and more resilient community.
It’s been reported that more than half of Australians over 50 are concerned about loss of mobility, and losing the ability to live independently (47%).
It is often commented how participants’ quality of life has improved, as they have greater access to facilities outside their home and in their community—shops, public transport, social and family occasions. Which brings greater independence and has demonstrably skyrocketed confidence. Plus, their ability to function well at home has improved, leading to requiring less informal and formal in-home help.
Born out of this program was something unexpected: the socialisation aspect. Whilst it was anticipated that there would be benefits of participants being granted an opportunity to leave their house, it was never predicted how far they would take the social aspect. Many participants have formed a strong bond and go for coffee directly after the session to enjoy community and connection. Not only that, but they have also formed a committee to organise and engage in fundraising activities and events.
Altaira’s commitment extends beyond physical health to championing diversity, gender equality, and community sustainability. By providing a safe space for older community members from diverse backgrounds, the program promotes inclusivity and eliminates barriers to participation based on age, gender, or ethnicity. Moreover, it actively engages with local organisations and councils, amplifying its impact on the broader community.
‘Since joining exercise classes, not only has our overall health and wellbeing been beneficial for everyone but friendships have been formed to the extent that 3 of us are embarking on an overseas trip to Vietnam. We thoroughly enjoy the exercises and fellowship formed with the physiotherapists and the rest of the staff at Altaira,’ Diane, Barbara and Margaret.
